There is a small restored area to the edge of the rim above the suspension holes; the right side has an almost 3-in area of restoration along the edge, probably covering chips; there is some rubbing to the gilt details of the portrait and minor wear to the enamel along the edge of the truncation.

Martin Roche Xavier Estève (1772-1853), general treasurer of France, served as the general administrator of finances in Prussia during the Napoleonic occupation. The portrait depicted on the present example was modeled from life by Leonhard Posch (1750-1831), circa 1807, and is illustrated by Anne Forschler-Tarrasch, Leonhard Posch 1750-1831, Porträtmodelleur und Bildhauer, cat. no. 234. The original portrait medallion was cast in iron at the royal Prussian iron foundry in Gleiwitz, Silesia, listed in the foundry records as series number VI 36, and is illustrated by Erwin Hintze, Gleiwitzer Eisenkunstguß, p. 23, pl. 25.
