Description

  • Peter Henry Emerson
  • 'MARSH LEAVES'
  • book
(London: David Nutt, 1895), a book illustrated with 16 photogravures after Emerson's photographs, each with a printed tissue title leaf.  Tall 4to, blue pictorial cloth (Truthful Lens 54; Photobook: A History, Vol. I, p. 72)

Condition

The photogravures in this book are all in excellent condition. A few of the plate's title leaves are creased, but this is inconsequential. There is some foxing on the front and rear endpapers, but this does not affect the plates or text pages. The covers are worn at the edges, and faded (especially along the spine). The top of the rear hinge is split.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

This is the 'ordinary' edition of Emerson's classic book, Marsh Leaves, of which 200 copies were printed.  The stark but lovely landscape studies Emerson created for this book differ from the more humanistic photographs that make up his earlier work.  In their minimalism, the Marsh Leaves images show a distinctly modern sensibility.
