Literature

Sarah Greenough, Alfred Stieglitz: The Key Set: The Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Photographs, no. 1415, in which the author locates four prints of this image: at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.; at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the print offered here.

Condition

This early print, warm-toned in the light areas, is on paper with a very faint surface sheen that has been flush-mounted and mounted again. It is in generally excellent condition. When the print is examined closely in raking light, small deposits of the photographer's original retouching are visible, as well as light silvering at the periphery. None of these issues detracts from the fine appearance of this print. As is typical with Stieglitz's Equivalents, this print is flush-mounted onto a sheet of thin board. After flush-mounting, Stieglitz typically mounted his Equivalents again to a larger sheet of similar board. In the present case, it appears that the secondary mount was trimmed flush to the first mount (and the image) and affixed onto a larger sheet of board.
