Condition

Ninth-plate daguerreotype of a Handsomely-Dressed Young Black Man: This plate is in very good condition, and delivers a great deal of detail throughout. The image is bright and clear. There is some faint warm-toned discoloration on the left and right sides of the plate which is accurately portrayed in the catalogue illustration. This daguerreotype is in a thermoplastic case. Sixth-plate daguerreotype of Black Child and White Child together: This plate is somewhat dim in appearance, and has some spotting as well as a few faint occasional wipes. Sixth-plate daguerreotype of an Elderly Black Woman: This plate has a somewhat clouded appearance, although this is due in part to the cover-glass. When viewed under direct light, the image shows itself to be quite strong and filled with detail. Quarter-plate ambrotype of a Seated Black Man: This image is strong and clear, although there are minor accretions on the underside of the cover-glass which obscure the image somewhat. There is some wear on the image on the left side, at the edge of the mat – this is unobtrusive.
