Description

  • Anonymous American Photographer
  • LOCOMOTIVE AND CREW
  • daguerreotype
half-plate daguerreotype, cased, circa 1850

Condition

This half-plate daguerreotype is crisp and clear and in very good condition. The image is of sufficient sharpness to reveal the lettering on the side of the locomotive – 'THOs. JAMES' – and to show clearly the faces and clothes of the majority of the men on the tender. As visible in the catalogue illustration, there is tarnishing around the periphery of the plate following the line of the mat – this does nothing to obscure the image. The uneven line of tarnish on the left edge indicates that the plate, which is unsealed, shifted in its mat somewhat at some point in the past. When examined closely, some small and unobtrusive accretions can be seen in several places on the plate, none of which obscures the image's detail. The leather case is separated at the hinge.
