Description

  • Josef Sudek
  • EGG ON PLATE
  • bromoil print
pigment print on laid paper, signed in pencil in the margin, 1950s

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, 6 April 1993, Sale 6407, Lot 306

Condition

This pigment print on laid paper has the rich warm tonality associated with this difficult printing process of which Sudek was a master. The very slightly glossy surface of the image suggests that Sudek applied a coating to the print, as is frequently seen. When the print is examined in raking light a number of linear soft creases can be seen in the image. Also visible in high raking light are handling creases: in the upper right quadrant, and another to the left of the egg. Neither of these breaks the emulsion. There are linear penciled notations on the reverse, as well as some overlapping of the coating.
