Description
- Bill Brandt
- LONDON (ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL)
- gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, the photographer's name stamp in black ink on the reverse, 1930s
Condition
A very similar view by Brandt of St. Paul's Cathedral, taken from nearly the same vantage point, is reproduced in "The Photography of Bill Brandt" (pl. 125). The two photographs were almost certainly taken on the same day, although at different times. The reproduced image shows a dusk scene, with lights in the buildings, and greater general illumination. The photograph offered here depicts a further advancement into night, with St. Paul's and the city skyline cast in silhouette.
This pleasingly moody print is on single-weight paper with a glossy ferrotyped surface. As is typical of ferrotyped prints, when viewed in raking light a number of inconsistencies can be seen in the surface, as well as a series of faint scratches, none of which breaks the emulsion. Also visible in raking light is a semi-circular crease just above the center of the print. This does not break the emulsion. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
