Description

  • Brassaï
  • 'FILLE DE JOIE, QUARTIER ITALIE'
  • gelatin silver
signed, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil and ink and with the photographer's copyright/studio stamp on the reverse, 1932, printed circa 1967 (Brassaï: The Monograph, p. 70)

Condition

This print, trimmed to the image and on matte-surface double-weight paper with a slight patina, is in generally excellent condition. The edges are bumped, and there is some inpainting near the corners. Along the lower right edge of the print is 1½-inch crescent-shaped crease that, though it appears to break the emulsion, is not distracting. In raking light, a few fingerprints are visible in the dark areas of the print. On the reverse of the print are the following annotations in pencil: '12/30'; 'no.7' (circled); 'pl. 332'; 'p.94'; and 'cassure.' The address in the stamp reads '81, Faubourg St-Jacques Paris 14eme Tel. 707.23.41.' When examined with an ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce. Brassai switched from using glossy paper to a more matte-surface paper around 1967. The appearance of the paper and the tonality of the print suggest it was printed close to this time.
