Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'RAIL FENCE - TETON'
- Gelatin silver print
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Crescent illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5, 6, and 10), titled, dated, and annotated in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1965
Condition
This print is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, the following are visible: a small indentation not breaking the emulsion in the upper left sky area; and several tiny deposits of original retouching.
There is very slight age-darkening at the periphery of the mount, and the mount corners are bumped. There is a very small segment of the top paper ply lifting near the top edge.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Although the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of this print is 1962 to 1963, Adams dated this print 1965 on the reverse. Stamp 10 indicates that this print is from a Polaroid Type 55 negative.
