Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • 'BRIDALVEIL FALL, YOSEMITE'
  • Gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, 'Display Print' and Carmel studio (BMFA 11) stamps, titled in ink on the reverse, circa 1927, probably printed between 1973 and 1977 (400 Photographs, p. 41; Classic Images, pl. 3; Yosemite and the Range of Light, pl. 66; Yosemite: Ansel Adams, p. 33; Illustrated Guide to Yosemite, p. 56)

Condition

This print, on paper with a surface sheen, is in generally very good to excellent condition. There is a tiny white spot in the lower right quadrant and a 1/16-inch white line at the left side that are actually unretouched areas in the negative. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: a crescent-shaped handling crease that does not break the emulsion at the lower edge of the print; and several tiny deposits of original retouching. An approximately 3/8-inch area around the periphery of the print is sunned. The display stamp on the reverse reads: 'Display Copy. Not for Sale.' Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1973 to 1977.
