Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • 'ROCKS AND LIMPETS, POINT LOBOS, CALIFORNIA'
  • gelatin silver
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Crescent illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5, 6, and 10), titled in ink, on the reverse, 1960, probably printed between 1962 and 1963 (Morgan & Morgan, pl. 92)

Condition

This photograph, mounted to cream-colored board, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, the following are visible: a 2-inch linear surface impression that does not appear to break the emulsion in the upper left quadrant of the image; and a few linear superficial surface scratches. Along the lower left edge of the print is a tiny loss to the top layer of emulsion. The cream-colored mount has fiber and adhesive remains from a previous overmat along its edges. The mount corners are slightly bent and number '4' and '2' are written on the left edge. On the reverse, the top edge of the mount is discolored and has light soiling at the periphery. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of this print: 1962 to 1963.
