Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'EVENING CLOUDS, EAST SIDE OF THE SIERRA NEVADA, CALIFORNIA'
- Gelatin silver print
probably from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled in ink, and 'Property of Polaroid' and 'Photography by Photographic Service Group' stamps on the reverse, 1962, probably printed between 1963 and 1970 (Portfolio IV, pl. 15)
Condition
This print is in generally very good condition. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: a 4-inch linear scuff that does not break the emulsion in the lower right quadrant; a faint scratch, also in the lower right quadrant; and 4 small deposits of original retouching that appear to have faded, in the center and right portions of the sky area.
The mount is lightly soiled, and exhibits some very slight age-darkening.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1963 to 1970.
