En 1997, Marina Abramovic a remporté le prix du 'Golden Lion' en tant que meilleur artiste à la Biennale de Venise pour sa performance 'Balkan Baroque'. L'œuvre constitue son approche artistique des guerres balkaniques dans les années 1990. D'un côté, la performance montrait des projections vidéo de Marina Abramovic, son père (un ancien général yougoslave) et sa mère. De l'autre côté, Marina Abramovic était assise sur un tas d'os de vaches, nettoyant les os avec une brosse, le tout dans une forte odeur de chair pourrie.
