Condition

Good condition overall with minor wear to the surface of the marble due to outside exposure. Her nose appears to be restored. One flower in her hair replaced. Her left upraised arm has been reattached, joint visible above her shoulder, with some rust stains. The fingers of her left hand restored. The toes appear to be restored. Minor chips to the edges of the base. Please note that handling charges for this lot are 300 € + VAT. These charges do not include packing or shipping.

Catalogue Note

La tête ceinte d'une couronne de fleurs, le corps enveloppé en un tissu fluide, cette figure allégorique du Printemps a été créée par Clésinger en 1874 pour faire pendant à l'Automne. Ayant conservée sa corne d'abondance en métal doré, cette dernière est conservée à l'Hermitage de St Petersbourg.
Originaire de Besançon où il nacquit en 1814, Jean-Baptiste Clésinger (1814-1883) fut l'élève de Bertel Thorvaldsen à Rome en 1832, et travailla à partir de 1838 dans l'atelier de David D'Angers à Paris. C'est en 1847 qu'il gagna de la notorité avec son marbre grandeur nature de la Femme piquée par un serpent (musée d'Orsay).
