Description

  • Siamese twins on a pillow
  • ivory figure on a hardwood pillow inlaid with ivory, with a later wood base

Condition

Overall the condition of the ivory is very good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent iwth age. There are several naturally occurring minor hairline fissures to the surface of the ivory. There is a stable hairline split to the wood of the pillow on the proper left side of the figure which has led to a loss in the inlay in the corner of the pillow. There is a small chip to the lower corner of the pillow on the proper right side of the figure which has led to the loss of the tassel.

Catalogue Note

A comparable pair of infants sleeping on ebony pillows attributed to Leonhard Kern (1588-1663) was in Sotheby's Dei Fürstliche Sammlung Thurn und Taxis sale on 12 to 15 October 1983 (vol. II, lot 1077).
