Condition

This canvas has been relined. There is a small paint loss visible at the upper left corner, and small scattered losses and abrasions are visible along the edges of the canvas. Along the right edge, towards the center of the canvas, there is a faint white mark approximately 3 inches in length. The dark green foliage and background areas have sunken; however, the details in the bright flowers and figure of the Infant Baptist with the sheep are quite well preserved. Overall, the paint layer is stable and in good state. Under ultraviolet light a thick, milky varnish presents itself, which slightly obscurs the paint surface. Still, scattered areas of retouch are visible along the four edges of the canvas, as well as in the shadowed areas around the Infant Baptist and in the green foliage. Additionally, there are a few spots of retouch in the face and eyes of the Baptist. The flowers themselves appear well preserved, with no visible retouches. The picture presents well and could be hung as is. In a foliate carved and gilt wood frame, with small worm holes throughout.
