Condition

Fresco has been laid down on canvas and backed with fiberglass. as can be seen in catalogue image, there are numerous losses, scuffs and small tears throughout, with one larger horizontal tear at upper left. some of these areas have been filled with a sand/gravel mixture. sufrace is buckled and uneven throughout. despite all this, there is still enough of the original fresco remaining and the figures read reasonably well. overall, it is an impressive image.

Catalogue Note

On the basis of images, Dr. Filippo Todini has identified this work to be by a painter active in the area of Montefalco-Spoleto in circa 1520, stylistically influenced by the late works of Francesco Melanzio.  It is very close to the frescos by an anonymous follower of Melanzio in the first and second chapel at right in the Chiesa di Sant'Illuminata, Montefalco and, also, to the works of the anonymous artist he has grouped under the name of the Maestro di Santa Maria di Reggiano (see F. Todini, La Pittura Umbra, Milan 1989, Vol. I, p. 188; Vol II, reproduced figures 1417-20).
