Description

  • Venice, a capriccio view of campo San Zanipolo with the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo and the scuola di san marco;Venice, a capriccio view of santa maria gloriosa dei Frari
  • a pair, both oil on canvas, in painted ovals

Condition

Both rectangular canvases are relined. The surfaces of the painted ovals are in good condition under a very dirty old varnish. The spandrels were originally painted black and then gilded during the relining. Much of this gilt has worn thin to reveals the paint underneath. Inspection under UV light reveals some scattered retouchings and strengthening to the darks of the former and some more minor scattered retouchings to the latter. Offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good condition if a little rubbed.
