Description

  • Francesco Graziani, called Ciccio Napoletano
  • Two battle scenes between Christians and Turks
  • a pair, both oil on canvas

Provenance

Chigi Collection (according to an old label on the reverse).

Condition

Both canvases have been relined. The paint surfaces are secure and in good condition under a dirty varnish. Passages of original impasto are evident in the lighter pigments most noticeably in the sky but the surface is somewhat abraded in the darker pigments of the foreground. Inspection under UV light reveals some very minor scattered retouchings particularly along the margins. Offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good condition.
