Condition
The painting is slightly cooler in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting has been recently cleaned, relined and revarnished and appears to the naked eye to be in good condition with some scattered craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals strengthenings along the craquelure lower left, centre and right, in the man's hand and clothing. Outlines have been strengthened in his nose, eye, hair and hat Some more concentrated retouchings can be found in the black tunic lower left. Overall the painting is clean and could hang now.
