Description

  • Allan Ramsay
  • Portrait of a Gentleman, half length, wearing a green jacket, holding a letter
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas appears to be unlined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is a thick layer of discoloured varnish and surface dirt overall. There are a very small number of visible old retouchings in the sitter's right arm, and there are two minor scratches to the varnish, one in the sitter's costume and the other in the background to the right of the sitter's head. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the condition mentioned above and reveals no recent retouchings. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded period style frame.
