Literature

H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, vol. II, Amsterdam 1973, p. 334, no. 740.

Condition

The painting is less red and cooler in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The flat and stable oak panel is bevelled along the four edges. The paint surface is secure and appears to the naked eye to be in good condition. Some minor scattered retouchings which have discoloured can be made out in the sky. Inspection under UV light confirms these retouchings and points to a few more. These are localised strengthenings which have been applied in a 'painterly' fashion to enhance definition rather than cover structural damage. They are more concentrated upper right where the paint surface appears to have been abraded somewhat in the past. The castle and lower section of the painting appear well preserved. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in fiar condition but with some minor knocks.
