Catalogue Note

When Alexander the Great fell ill none of his physicians dared treat him apart from his friend Philip.  Alexander had received a letter from his general Parmenio warning him that Philip might try to kill him. To show his trust in Philip he handed him the letter at the same time as drinking the medicine he had administered.
