  • oil on canvas

Lilleshall, 38 Bea Brunner (according to an old label on the reverse).

Condition

The canvas has a recent lining which is stable. The paint surface is in satisfactory condition, although affected by localised areas of wear. The sky has undergone some strengthening and there are some fairly recent retouchings in the landscape which are obvious to the naked eye. The varnish layer is deceased and no longer wholly translucent; this should be removed and replaced. Sold with a carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition.

Catalogue Note

This is a version of a painting sold in these Rooms, 7 July 1999, lot 487 (as Attributed to Viola) which was subsequently with Galleria Altomani, Pesaro. That canvas is now considered by scholars to be an autograph work by Sisto Badalocchio, datable to circa 1608-9 (see M. Pirondini, Sisto Badalocchio, 2004, pp. 93-94, cat. no. 12, reproduced, and in colour plate II).
