Osorio was a close follower of Murillo and, as with so many of his works, the present painting is loosely based on Murillio's composition in the Norton Simon Foundation (see D.A. Iñiguez, Murillo, Madrid 1981, vol. I, p. 271, cat. no. 336, reproduced vol. II, plate 387).
