Catalogue Note

The subject is taken from Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata and symbolises the sacrifice of love for duty.  Here the Christian prince Rinaldo is seen diverted from the crusade by his love for the witch Armida. His two comrades-in-arms, Ubaldo and Carlo, seen here in the background, seek him out to persuade him to return to war through the means of a mirror which shows Rinaldo an image of himself idle and weakened by love.  For the provenance see the note to the two previous lots.
