Description
- Virgin and Child
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure with craqulure throughout and under a discoloured varnish. Several areas appear to the naked eye to be abraded, for example in the Virgin's hair. Old frame abrasion can be made out, as well as some scuffs and losses, lower left and lower right. The paint is lifting slightly 5 cm from the right edge. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings in the outlines to add definition, for example in the hair and in the edges of the hands. Some retouchings can be made out in the bloak cloak and in the Child's face and hair. Other localised losses and retouchings are present. Some restorative attention, as well as removal of the old varnish and application of a new one, would improve the overall tonality of the work.
Offered in a wood and plaster frame with some losses.
