Description
- John de Critz the Elder
- Portrait of James I
oil on panel
- 57 by 45 cm., 22 1/2 by 17 1/2 in.
Condition
STRUCTURE
The structure consists of three separate panels. The panel joins are strengthened, verso, with two vertical bars, and two horizontal bars at the top and bottom.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in fair condition. The varnish is heavily discoloured and covered with a thick layer of dirt. The paint is flaking in two areas below the sitter's ear, visible in the catalogue illustration. In the lower of these two areas the paint has pulled away the jesso layer below, exposing a small section of the panel below. The varnish layer is generally deteriorated overall, and there are signs of minor retouching to the vertical panel joins.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered old strengthening in the background, and confirms the general condition mentioned above. There is old strengthen to the ribbons of the garter around the sitter's neck, and there is scattered surface residue which fluoresce under UV.
FRAME
Held in a painted wooden frame.
