The actual painting is a little less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old relining and retains much of its bounce. There's a small hole in the canvas in the sky upper centre and another small vertical repaired tear in the sky in the centre. There's a vertical crease slightly visible running approx. 15 cm. from the left edge. The paint layer is secure, if a little thin in the dunes, but the impasto, in particular in the figures, appears nicely preserved, Some scattered retouchings in the sky are visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals more extensive tiny scattered retouchings in the sky, and a larger area in the sky in the centre and around the church tower. The figures, however, appear well intact, with only minimal few touches here and there. Offered in a plain wood frame with some minor losses.
