Description

  • Meiffren Conte
  • Still life of assorted shells and coral upon a table draped with a carpet
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Lady of Title"), London, Sotheby's, 30 October 2001, lot 386 (as follower of Meiffren Conte).

Condition

The actual painting is a little softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined. No damages are apparent. The paint layer is secure, if a little thin in the background, but the impasto in the shells is nicely preserved. Some minor retouchings can be observed along the upper and left edge and in the background. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some additional scattered small retouchings in the background, along the edges and in the tablecloth, but the shells are well preserved. Offered in a decorative black frame with gilt moulded fillet and borders, with a few chips.
