Description
- Antoine Sallaert
- Interior with elegant figures singing and making music by candle light
- oil on panel, en brunaille, unframed
Condition
The actual painting is a lot softer and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The single panel has a slight convex bow and is bevelled along all but the lower edges. There's a chip in the lower left corner. There's an area of paint loss in the upper right corner, and minor small paint losses along the outer edges. There's a pin point size paint loss to the lower left, but otherwise, the paint layer is well preserved. Only a few tiny scattered retouchings can be made out. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light is inclusive due to the varnish layer.
This lot is offered unframed.

Catalogue Note
Very little is known about the life and work of Sallaert, but apart from his paintings and tapestry cartoons, he certainly executed a number of monotypes. Stylistically, this painting may be compared to a drawing of a Musical Allegory in the collection of Georges de Lastic, Paris.1
