Description
- Cornelis Verbeeck
- A man-of-war and other shipping in choppy seas along a rocky coast
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is less red in tone and the main ship is more detailed than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. No damages are apparent. The paint layer is somewhat abraded in some areas and subsequent retouchings, e.g. in the sky are visible to the naked eye. The impasto in the main ship is nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. More extensive retouchings throughout, in particular in the sky, fluoresce under UV light. Furthermore, a vertical repaired and retouched crease running from the upper to the lower edge along the right edge is revealed, as well as a larger area of retouching in the sky upper centre. A few minor retouchings are visible in the main ship.
Offered in a wood cassetta frame with a gilt fillet and decorated at the centres and cornes with stylised leaf scrolls, in good condition.
