Description
- Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp
- Portrait of a lady, seated three-quarter length, in black dress with a molensteenkraag
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 23 April 1917, lot 87 (as by Bartholomeus van der Helst).
Condition
The actual painting is a bit lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggest. The canvas is relined (glue). Stretcher marks are visible to the front and the canvas appears to be slightly enlarged to the right edge. No major damages are apparent. The paint layer is under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Some small discoloured retouchings can be seen in her right hand, some repaired damages can be seen in the background, of which two bigger spots are slightly visible to the left centre. There is a surface scratch in her left arm. A few tiny repaired paint losses can be seen in her dress. Overall the painting seems to be in good condition, with the impasto of the lace and dress very nicely preserved. Inspection under Ultra Violet light reveals the retouchings as mentioned above and some small retouchings along the edges, but is further more impeded by the uneven varnish layer. The painting would benefit from cleaning.
Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, chips. (ML)
