Description

  • Winter landscape with elegant figures skating and conversing on the ice outside the walls of a Dutch town
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Gentleman"), London, Phillips, 3 July 1990, lot 18 (as circle of Denis van Alsloot);
With Galerie Florence de Voldère, Paris, 1991 (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is a little less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 horizontal planks and is bevelled along the upper and left and right edges. The lower edge has a small strip of wood. The join has been reinforced to the reverse with 3 battons. There is a small thin horizontal split off approx. 4 cm. to the lower right. Otherwise, no damages are apparent. The paint surface is generally sound, if quite abraded in the sky and ice, and subsequent retouchings are visible to the naked eye in these areas. Retouchings can also be made out along the join. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals quite extensive retouchings throughout and strengthening in the figures. Offered in a plain wood frame with a fake ivory fillet.
