After Nicolas Poussin: The actual painting is a little deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old stable relining. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is generally sound if a little thin in the darker areas and the sky, where some retouching can be made out with the naked eye. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light is partially impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does reveal some additional scattered retouchings, and a larger area in the lower foreground right, but overall, the figures appear in nicely preserved. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame in fair condition. Follower of Titian: The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is somewhat abraded in the brown tones. The paint layer is slightly beginning to lift in some areas. Some small old retouched scattered losses are visible to the naked eye, e.g. lower and upper right. The paint surface is under a dirrt varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some additional scattered retouchings in the background and in the red cloth, but further inspection is impeded by the dirty varnish. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some small losses.
