Description

  • Pieter Neefs the Younger
  • a capriccio of the antwerp cathedral interior with elegantly dressed figures
  • signed and dated lower right on the pillar: Peeter/ Neefs/ 1666
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is greener and shows more detail than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old effective relining. No damages are apparent. The paint layer is generally sound, though some areas of abrasion are apparent, e.g. in the left hand figures and background. In the centre and the figures a lot of detail has been preserved. Very few tiny scattered retouchings can be made out with the naked eye. The paint surface is under a dirty vanish. Inspection under UV light is partially impeded by the dirty varnish, but does reveal some additional filled in craquelure in the centre. Offered in a French decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with some losses.
