Description
- Sebastiaan Vrancx
- A village scene
oil on panel, stamped on the reverse with the panel mark of the City of Antwerp and the clover leaf mark of the panel maker Michiel Claessens (active in Antwerp 1590-1637)
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel seems to consist of 2 planks joined horizontally, and the lower plank seems to have split. The join and crack have been reinforced to the reverse with 7 small battons. The upper plank has a slight convex bow. The paint surface is generally sound and under a dirty varnish layer. Some small scattered retouched losses can be made out with the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals the varnish is unevenly cleaned, and further revals additional tiny scattered retouchings in the sky and some minimal strengthening in some of the figures.
Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame in good condition.
