Description

  • Abraham van Cuylenborch
  • Nymphs bathing in a grotto
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is somewhat brighter and shows a lot more detail than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has a small horizontal crack running from the right edge in the lower centre, and there's a thin repaired split in the upper left corner. Otherwise, the panel is in good condition. The panel is uncradled and bevelled on all edges. The paint layer is secure, if a little abraded in some of the darker passages. Especially in the lighter parts, the paint surface is well preserved, and under a dirty varnish layer. A few small scattered retouchings can be made out with the naked eye, but further inspection under UV light is inconclusive due to the varnish layer. Offered in a French style gilt wood frame in fair condition.
