Description

  • Gerrit Claesz. Bleker
  • King Ahab fatally wounded by an arrow in the battle against the Syrians
  • signed and dated lower centre: GB(in compendium)leker fe 1626
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of two planks joined horizontally. The join has been reenforced to the reverse with s strip of wood. The panel is lightly bevelled to all sides. No damages are apparent, other than a few minor paint losses along the edges, due to the frame. The paint surface is secure, if a little abraded in some areas, e.g. the rocks and lower foreground left. There's a fine craquelure throughout and the paint surface is under a discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV light remains inconclusive due to the dirty varnish layer. Offered in a wood and plaster gold frame with severe losses.
