By whom sold, New York, Christie's, 9 February 2009, lot 54 (as 'Follower of Esaias van de Velde').

Exhibited

Indianapolis, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Young Rembrandt and his Times, 1958, no. 37 (as by Esaias van de Velde).

Literature

G. Keyes, Esaias van den Velde, Groningen 1984, p. 194, no. REJ.6, figure 107 (as probably by Esaias van de Velde II or Pieter de Neyn).

Condition

The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has a slight convex bow and is bevelled to the reverse. The paint surface is under a dull and milky varnish. The paint layer is secure if a little thin in the house and horse and figure lower left. A few tiny scattered restored losses are visible in the sky. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals additional strengthenings in some of the figures. Offered in a later ebonised black wood frame in good condition.
