Description

  • Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem
  • A southern landscape with a shepherd and a shepherdess resting with their cattle by a watering place, ruins beyond
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Cologne, 19-21 November 1981, lot 30 (as by Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp);
Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, 17 May 2004, lot 74 (as attributed to Nicolaes Claesz. Berchem).

Condition

The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel, which consists of two horizontal planks, is in good condition and bevelled to the reverse. The paint surface is under a dirty and yellowed layer of varnish. No damages are apparent. The paint surface appears well preserved with subtle details still intact. Some scattered retouchings can be observed in the sky. Inspection under UV light is partially impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does reveal additional retouchings across the surface in the sky, some tiny retouchings in the figures and minimal strengthening in the cattle. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with a damage in the lower right corner.
