Description
- Renier Nooms called Zeeman
- A naval battle in a calm sea with a Dutch man-o'-war firing a canon and a shipwreck in the foreground
- remains of a monogram lower centre
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is less red and more grey blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a fairly recent effective relining. The paint surface is under a slightly yellowed layer of varnish. No damages are apparent. The paint surface appears well preserved. A few scattered discoloured retouchings can be observed in the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals additional scattered retouchings in the sky and water and some minor ones and minor strengthenings in some of the figures and some of the ships.
Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with some minor losses.

Catalogue Note
In style and composition this painting can be closely compared to paintings by the marine painter Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman. See for example the one at the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (inv. no. KMSsp537), which reveals a close likeness in the representation of carefully depicting the ships and their sails, as well as in the rendering of the ribbed water.
