Description
- Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp
- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a black dress with a molensteenkraag and a white lace bonnet
inscribed with the age of the sitter, signed and dated lower left: Ætatis 24/ jc (in compendium) cŭÿp f Ao i64i
- oil on panel
Condition
The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel seems to consist of three vertical planks. The joins have been reenforced to the reverse with for battons. The panel has lightly split along the joins but is not unstable. The paint surface is under a yellowed layer of varnish. The paint layer is in good condition with the impasto of the dress and lace well preserved. Small scattered retouchings can be observed in the background. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings along the joins and a few very minor ones in the face and collar.
Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame in good condition.
