Description

  • A wooded landscape with travellers and horse-drawn wagons on a path, a shepherd with his cattle in the foreground
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two horizontal planks and has been cradled. The paint surface is under a slightly yellowed layer of varnish and there's a tendency towards flaking in the sky. The paint layer, in particular the impasto of the trees, is well preserved although the figures in the left foreground are a little thin. A few retouchings can be observed in the sky and in the lower right corner, and there's some minor strengthening of some of the figures. Inspection under UV light reveals a few additional spots of retouching in the woods and in the far background. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame in good condition.
