Description
- Jan Brueghel the Elder
- Still life of parrot tulips, morning glory, roses, peonies, lilies, snowdrops and other flowers in a stone vase, together with a butterfly
- oil on panel
Provenance
With Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam, where bought by the family of the present owners in the 1950s.
Condition
The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of two vertical planks and has a convex curvature. There's a thin vertical split of approx. 5 cm. in the upper left corner. The paint surface is secure, if a bit abraded in the background, and particularly the impasto of the flowers is nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a slightly yellowed varnish. Some small scattered retouchings can be observed in the vase and in the lower foreground. Inspection under UV light reveals additional retouchings in the background upper right, and minor retouchings and strengthenings in the flowers (more extensive ones in the rose tulip upper right, and in the leafs and flowers lower right).
Offered in a decorative black wood frame in good condition.
