The painting is a little warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The paper has been laid on to a slightly bowed canvas. A horizontal fold in the paper can be made out along the centre of the composition. The paint surface is under a discoloured varnish. The impasto is preserved very well especially in the highlights in the armour and in the plumes of the helmet. A very small crack is present in the paint surface in the neck. Satisfactory inspection under UV light is impeded by the varnish but overall the painting appears in excellent condition.
