The painting is a little warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The paper has been laid on to a slightly bowed canvas. A horizontal fold in the paper can be made out along the centre of the composition. The paint surface is under a discoloured varnish. The impasto is preserved very well especially in the highlights in the armour and in the plumes of the helmet. A very small crack is present in the paint surface in the neck. Satisfactory inspection under UV light is impeded by the varnish but overall the painting appears in excellent condition. Offered in a modern wooden frame in fair condition.
