Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The unframed painting is made up of a single panel which has a slight bow. The paint surface is secure and under a dirty yellowed varnish. A few old worm holes have come through to the paint surface, as visible in the catalogue illustration. A very minor paint loss is visible to the left of John's ear. The background is a little abraded in areas, and the blue cloak which Jesus wears has a more distinct craquelure than other areas. Unevenness in the tonality of the paint surface corresponds to old discoloured retouchings. These are confirmed by UV light as well as some other minor painterly retouchings. The painting would benefit from a clean.
