This rare of view of Istanbul is slightly cooler in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been relined and has three small patches to the reverse which correspond to restored damage on the paint surface. These occur upper left in the sky, lower left in the house and centre right. Some further restored damage is present centre right. The brown tones of the painting have become somewhat sunken and the red ground is visible. The thick and slightly discoloured varnish impedes satisfactory inspection with UV light. However, the painting is in large passages untouched and the details are well preserved.
