Literature

P. Huys Janssen, Jan Van Bijlert, 1597/8-1671, Catalogue Raisonné, Amsterdam 1998, n. C12, p. 182, fig. 213 (come Stile di Jan van Bijlert).

Condition

The painting is less bright and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a tight relining which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. To the naked eye the paint surface appears secure and under a slightly discoloured varnish. Scattered discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye, but these few are localised and minor, espcially for the size od the canvas, as confirmed by inspection under UV light. The painting is abraded in some localised areas, for example in the flower centre right, in the young woman's chest, above the hands in the centre of the composition, in the tunic to the left, in the hat and in the cheek of the standing man. Offered in a later carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
