Condition

The painting is warmer in tone and less red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a modern and effective relining which has not flattened the paint surface The impasto is well preserved in the face, cuff, headdress, hands and lion. As visible in the catalogue illustration, the blue cloak is severely abraded. Also abraded are the hair, the right of the neck and the lower part of the right hand. Some small infilled losses can be made out above the head, as well as a small dent upper left. The background appears rather sunken. Inspection under UV light confirms the aformentioned condition. Offered in a later wood frame with some paint losses.
